Polish teen wins Central European programming competition

A Polish teenager has won the 33rd Central European Olympiad in Informatics, a prestigious regional programming competition held earlier this month in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana.

Artur Smoleński topped the field with 535 points, finishing ahead of 58 contestants from 15 countries.

Fellow Pole Krzysztof Witkowski also won a gold medal.

Both students attend the Stanisław Staszic High School in Warsaw, which has a long tradition of success in mathematics and computer science competitions.

Another Polish contestant, Franciszek Szymula of August Witkowski High School No. 5 in the southern city of Kraków, won a silver medal, while Stanisław Lada narrowly missed out on bronze, finishing just two points short.

The Central European Olympiad in Informatics is one of the region's leading programming competitions for secondary school students.

Next year's competition will be held in Poznań, western Poland.
